Using writing prompts for inspiration
Bite-sized exercises to start my day, get my brain going for my WIPS
Dear Readers,
It can be hard to get the creative juices flowing at times. Writer’s block happens to even the best authors, and there’s nothing worse than opening up your document and just staring at the screen, unable to get the words out, or typing a few sentences or paragraphs, only to erase it all later because the words just don’t seem to fit with the vibe of the story.
I’ve been suffering from a bout of this lately, and my daily word count has dropped as a result. So I took up a new tactic to try to combat it. I started looking for writing prompts on BlueSky. Many writers will post a daily prompt on their feed to challenge other writers. I just look for one that I like for that day and use it. One author I’ve followed has been using the Seven Deadly Sins lately, which sounded like an interesting concept, so I jumped on board with it. So far, I’ve stuck with writing something Pride and Prejudice related, but I may branch out further if the mood strikes me.
Here are some of my entries.
If you enjoyed these little microfiction stories, you can follow me on my BlueSky feed for more of them in the future.
Have you tried any writing exercises to get inspiration for a bigger project? How did it go for you?
Happy reading,
Amanda Kai

A refreshing take on the Pride and Prejudice story, Caroline’s tale begins with a twist of fate for Elizabeth Bennet when she wins a lottery drawing earning her a house in town and a substantial fortune.
Meanwhile, Mr. Darcy makes a detour to Highbury when Mr. Bingley leases a house near Hartfield. Their fates are drawn together at a place called Ever After End, where Mr. Darcy’s matchmaking godmother hosts annual house parties to help those ill-fated in love to find their happily ever afters.
Amidst a hilarious cast of boisterous gentlemen, scheming ladies, an American with a wide vocabulary of slang, and a chaperone who believes her late husband’s spirit inhabits a swan, three Bennet sisters seek to find love. But misunderstandings and a little bit of pride and prejudice interfere between our strong-willed Elizabeth and her Mr. Darcy.
If you like low-angst variations on Pride and Prejudice that show a long backstory and character development, have a variety of crossover characters from other novels, and plenty of humor, then you’ll enjoy Caroline Cartier’s Ever After End.
